"Wait, Is That a Girl?" – A Ladies-Only Green Laning Weekend By Katie Nash

"Wait, is that a girl driving?" It's a comment many of us have heard while out on the lanes. Having been green laning with friends and often being the only woman in the group—or the only female driver—I always wondered what it would be like to create a space where women could feel genuinely welcome, supported, and empowered behind the wheel.

So, I decided to do exactly that.

I put out a social media story about organizing a lady-only green laning weekend, and the response was unreal. Interest flooded in almost immediately. While Land Rovers made up the majority of the convoy, the event was open to all makes of capable 4x4s.

Of course, being realistic, Land Rovers like to keep us on our toes. Inevitably, a few had to drop out due to vehicle repairs and last-minute truck issues.

Day One: Building Confidence on the Lanes

The first day saw an epic convoy of ladies in Discoverys and Defenders, with drivers ranging from complete beginners to those with plenty of off-road experience. With Lenny in the lead I couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear at the trucks following me. 

We tackled a mixture of terrain throughout the day, enjoying everything from muddy splashes to breathtaking Welsh scenery. As we approached more technical sections, the less experienced drivers were guided through the obstacles with advice on lines and spotting.

What stood out most wasn't the driving—it was the atmosphere. The camaraderie, teamwork, and encouragement were incredible. Every achievement was met with cheers, support, and genuine excitement from the rest of the group. Watching women build confidence and push themselves outside their comfort zones was exactly what the weekend was all about.

The First Casualty

Returning to camp that evening, we discovered our first casualty of the trip. A D2 had effectively performed a "caliper delete" after completely losing its caliper carrier bolts. What followed was an evening of phone calls, messages, and frantic parts hunting.

Thankfully, by the end of the night, we'd located replacement bolts. After all, we never leave a girl behind.

Early the next morning, I found myself meeting our hero to collect the two offending bolts.

Our savior had thoughtfully applied copper slip to the bolts, but considering they'd already ejected themselves once, we decided Loctite was the safer option!

Day Two: Strata Florida

Our second day took us towards one of Wales' most famous green lanes: Strata Florida.

Along the route, we crossed paths with few groups of enduro riders who seemed genuinely amazed to see a convoy of female drivers.

The ladies absolutely smashed it. Many even took on the infamous bomb hole, again the support and encouragement for each other was amazing.

After Strata Florida, we picked up a few smaller lanes before making our way back to camp.

Day Three: Elan Valley

By day three, some ladies had headed home due to other commitments, leaving us with just three trucks.

With a more relaxed pace planned, we enjoyed breakfast before heading out towards the beautiful Elan Valley. The stunning scenery, water crossings, and quieter lanes provided the perfect way to round off the weekend. Then it was the sad moment of driving home and unfortunately a few of the trucks had issues on the way back but everyone made it home … some later than others.

What started as a simple idea had grown into an unforgettable weekend of adventure, learning, laughter, problem-solving, and friendship. This may have been the first ladies-only green laning weekend, it definitely won't be the last!
