Jaguar Land Rover India recently unveiled armoured versions of its Range Rover & Discovery models in Delhi. Estimated price Rs 3.75 – 4 crores
Considering the premium SUV bracket that it represents, Tata Motors acquired iconic British SUV brand Land Rover has enjoyed a positive growth trajectory since its foray into India two years ago. For a country largely obsessing over small cars, it was a challenge for the word renowned SUV major to make a strong impression amongst the scattered high-end SUV buyers in sub-continent; and it has done just that.
Riding on the overwhelming response to its wide range of premium SUV?s with their immense off-roading capabilities, Land Rover has now introduced armoured versions of its Discovery and Range Rover models said to be priced between Rs 3.75 to 4 crores respectively. With its inbuilt state-of-the-art 4X4 all terrain capabilities, the extra bit of ballistic armour now clad on its already burly body is Land Rover?s idea of bringing forth the most versatile, luxurious and indestructible SUV yet to be seen in India.
The Armoured Range Rover whilst retaining its superior on-road and off-road performance will now be padded up with B6 Level ballistic and blast protection in accordance with European standard EN1063 level B6. With an assault rifle armouring level, which is virtually indistinguishable from the standard vehicle this bulletproof, blastproof SUV is now one of the safest automobiles to hit Indian roads.

Land Rover’s Freelander 2 is now available for less than £20,000, with the launch of its ‘White & Black’ special editions.
On sale in January 2010, and priced from £19,945, the entry-level models might be cheaper, but they don’t scrimp on equipment. A keyless starter button, 17-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass and a load space cover all come as standard.
Available in Alaska White or Santorini Black, the special editions also get an Ebony cloth interior.
Engine stop-start technology
Freelander 2 ‘White & Black’ models have a 2.2-litre diesel engine with a six-speed manual gearbox. Land Rover’s stop-start technology is also in place to switch off the engine while the car is stationary, which will help it achieve average fuel economy of 42.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 179g/km.
Freelander 2 Sport
Also new for 2010 are two sportily styled versions of the Freelander 2 Sport. Both will get the 2.2-litre diesel engine, 19-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler, plus colour-matched exterior trim, door handles and mirror casings.
The standard model is available in Santorini Black and Lago Grey, with a cloth interior, while models fitted with a sports pack are available only in Lago Grey and with a leather interior.
On sale in January 2010, prices for the Freelander 2 Sport start from £26,695.

It has been described as a bold evolution of the traditional Land Rover design. It is stylish, very desirable, but crucially is the smallest and potentially the greenest car that Land Rover has ever made.
The LRX “concept car”, designed at the company’s HQ in Gaydon, Warwickshire, will get its world debut next month at the Detroit Motor Show.
It is a small and sporty three-door vehicle, which the company says shows “a vision of its future”, and is being unveiled just two years after the launch of the highly successful Range Rover Sport.
But unlike the Sport, which was primarily designed to appeal to those who wanted a high performance 4×4, the LRX appeals to a broader market.
The lower weight and reduced aerodynamic drag should allow significant gains on fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.
There is also talk that, if it goes into production, the car will be sold with the option of a hybrid engine.
Land Rover’s design director, Gerry McGovern, said: “It will appeal to a younger set of customers because it is very dramatic and very stylish, but will still have that core capability and level functionality that you’d expect to see in a Land Rover.”
‘Gas guzzlers’
The big question is, did Land Rover go green voluntarily or was it pushed?
The launch of the new concept car follows much adverse publicity about 4x4s being “gas guzzlers”.
There was also a high profile break-in at the company’s Solihull factory by the environmental pressure group Greenpeace.
In addition to being smaller and lighter than previous models, the LRX will use reclaimed and recycled materials.
It clearly indicates Land Rover’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its vehicles.
The company’s managing director, Phil Popham says: “Absolutely it’s looking at sustainability. It’s looking at environmental awareness and environmental needs.”
Land Rover has already embarked on a £700m initiative designed to make all its cars more sustainable in the future.
‘Extend appeal’
It has recently announced the introduction of a system that allows the engine to be stopped automatically whenever a vehicle is stationary.
The engine restarts when the driver pushes down on the clutch pedal. It is also looking at other technologies including electric rear axle drive at low speeds.
The LRX is only the second concept car in Land Rover’s history.
The Range Stormer was the first and it later evolved in the Range Rover Sport.
The new car has been designed primarily to test the future design direction of Land Rover.
Mr Popham added: “Clearly we want to determine what the car is going to be for us to really extend our appeal beyond the segment in which we compete today.”
Sale process
The launch of the new concept car also comes at a time when the company, along with Jaguar, is being sold by owner Ford.
The sale process, which has been going on for several months, is believed to have entered its final phase.
The Indian car maker, Tata, is thought to be the front runner and an announcement is expected early in 2008.
Mr Popham said: “Regardless of ownership we need to look as how we’re going to continue to broaden the appeal of Land Rover.”
Nothing is being said officially ahead of LRX’s public launch next month in the US, but there are already strong rumours that the new “baby” Land Rover could go into production as early as 2010.
It seems unlikely that any new owner will not want to push ahead with a project that has already reached such an advanced stage and that has so far had such a positive reaction from the industry.
The Range Rover’s had a heart transplant. A twin-turbo V8 diesel now murmurs quietly away under the bonnet. Nick Fone takes it for a spin
The Range Rover is a vehicle of contractions. It’s big, bulky and angular but somehow poised and elegant at the same time.At 2.7t, the diesel’s heavy but, in its latest guise, incredibly quick.
And that’s thanks to its new twin-turbo V8 power-plant.
Developed at Ford’s Dagenham plant specifically for the Range Rover and its ‘Sporty’ cousin, the new 3.6-litre engine pumps out 272bhp – making it 54% more powerful than the BMW-built 3-litre straight-six used previously.
Thanks to its sophisticated common-rail control, torque is also up by 64% but even with all that extra performance, the big motor is still only as thirsty as its predecessor.
On the road…
Like its fore-runners, the Range Rover oozes opulence, especially in Vogue SE trim. The big 4×4 drives like a luxury saloon but can shift like a sports coupe when it’s required.
In relaxed cruising mode, serenity abounds – the six-speed ZF auto box doing its job more smoothly than a Sloane Square sales-exec.
In fact ratio changes are almost completely imperceptible – a flicker from the rev-counter is the only indicator that you’ve shifted up a gear.
But put the pedal to the metal, and the beast begins to snarl. The acceleration is wickedly enticing and, because of the ultra-calm air-ride suspension, you’re soon cruising at speeds that would cause coronaries with the boys in blue.
Handling is much the same as before – swing into corners too hard and, although better than most 4x4s, the Range Rover rolls about like a ship on high seas.
But swerve off the beaten track and serenity returns – lumps and bumps ironed out just as you’d expect.
There’s no shortage of power now this big V8 oil-burner has arrived and it promises not to be too thirsty either.
But it’s still eye-wateringly expensive – with DVD-players, Sat-Nav and deep shag-pile, the Vogue SE costs nearly £70,000. That’s equivalent to the profit from enough milk to fill Lake Superior, 700,000t of wheat. But much more fun.
Of course you could always opt for the bargain-basement HSE version – a snip at just £54,000.

Everyone has enemies. Not everyone has enemies with grenades, assault rifles, and the willingness to use them. If you are one of these lucky individuals, however, you’ll be glad to know about the Range Rover Vogue Security Vehicle.
The four levels of security available correspond to four ways of killing you: handgun, assault rifle, high velocity rifle, and “ultimate.” You’d think that last category would involve tactical thermonuclear weapons, or at least an envelope full of anthrax. But no:
“The ultimate version provides protection against armour piercing to European B6 plus standard, and is capable of withstanding attack from a NATO 7.62 ball round fired from 10 metres at a typical velocity of 830 metres per second. B6 plus standard, favoured by Heads of State and other diplomatic, political and religious ‘targets’, also protects against attack by weapons including the Kalashnikov AK47 rifle.”
If someone does drop the Big One, you’ll just have to climb out of your Range Rover and jump under your desk like everyone else.
While it’s no backyard bomb shelter, this ride is tricked out with ballistic and blast steel, Kevlar, Spectra-shield, Dyneema, and 40 mm plasma-cut glass — not to mention a floor pan that will stop two DM51 hand grenades at once (L2A2 grenade protection optional). That adds about two tons, more than the weight of the original vehicle. Which doesn’t stop it from going pretty much anywhere you want, unlike those namby-pamby armored limos you’re used to.
And yes, it has air bags. I’m betting they’ll even throw in childproof locks.

The Land Rover Defender was officially re-launched yesterday. This means more changes for the 59 year history of Defender.
The basic defender hasn’t really changed all that much. It still comes in a choice of three wheelbase lengths and 14 separate body styles.
.
Prices have increased since that last release of the Defender – prices have increased by around £400 and prices range between £18,645 to £26,605
It is thought that 80% of Defenders ever made are still in use today.

Land Rover have recently released a few details about the new LR2 which is set to replace the Freelander in 2008.
Land Rover have said that ‘they aimed to produce a 4 x 4 with a carlike ride but with off-road ability’ and that is certainly something they have worked on. There is 8 inches of clearance room under the 4 x 4 and it will also have the terrain response system which will optimize the engine, transmission, traction and suspension depending on the terrain.
It will have 230 horsepower and a Volvo developed engine which can go from 0-60 in 8.4 seconds. It will also do 25 miles per gallon.
Land Rover have designed the LR2 as a spacious 4 x 4 with 59 cubic feet of room with the back seats folded down.
Optional extras will include a keyless starting ability, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers and mp3 compatibility.
