Land Rover’s New 4.4-Liter Diesel V-8

Land Rover’s New 4.4-Liter Diesel V-8 Still Not Cleared For U.S. Sale, Could Come in 2014.

Passenger-vehicle-grade diesel engines continue to be at a stalemate in the United States, with the ever-stringent emissions limits mandated by our Environmental Protection Agency snuffing the life out of globally available diesel engines before they even make it to our shores. Land Rover’s new 4.4-liter diesel V-8, which can be found in the British firm’s 2011 Range Rover, meets Euro5 emissions standards but is unable to pass the requisite tests in the U.S. Our current 2010 standards are reportedly the equivalent of Europe’s Euro6 standards, which don’t go into effect until 2014 on the Old Continent. Barring any significant alterations to future EPA standards, Land Rover insiders have told Autocar the oil-burning 4.4-liter V-8 could cross the Atlantic then.

On our soil, the 2011 Range Rover is motivated by either a normally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 developing 375 horsepower, or a supercharged V-8 of identical displacement producing 510 horsepower.

Range Rover Evoque Prototypes Go Undercover

The new Range Rover Evoque has entered its final phase of testing, with hundreds of prototype models dispatched around the globe for trial in the toughest climates and conditions.

And Land Rover is making no secret of the operation – its design team has fitted ten of the prototypes with funky camouflage wraps, meant to introduce the new car to ten key cities worldwide.

These unmissable vehicles will be spotted in London, New York, Sao Paulo, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Berlin, Sydney, Shanghai and Moscow. But they are just a small proportion of the hundreds of pre-production cars that will be rigorously tested over millions of miles to ensure the Evoque surpasses the highest standards of quality and reliability when it goes on sale in summer 2011.

Many of Land Rover’s 3500 engineers are dedicated to the programme. Teams will travel around the world to test the car in the most extreme conditions, ranging from Arctic to desert, from German Autobahns to Tokyo city traffic. Alongside the engineers, Land Rover is working with 120 unique component suppliers and will carry out 16,700 individual tests to examine every separate part and system.

Usually prototypes are disguised for discretion, but these ten are supposed to be seen. The funky camouflage imagery is actually a GPS mapping trail of the ten cities each car can be found in. Each vehicle says ‘Hello’ to the city, signaling the eagerly awaited global launch of the new car, which was first seen as the LRX concept in 2009.

Like all Range Rovers, the new compact model will have been proven against all the elements when it reaches showrooms next summer.

Land Rover: Sneak Peek at Luxury Planet Saver

Land Rover has sort of introduced the sixth vehicle in its range, the small Evoque, by releasing some details, only one photograph and saying we’ll have to wait for the Paris Motor Show late September for more.

But the single picture shows that, as expected, the two-door vehicle closely follows the lines of the 2008 LRX concept.

“After a positive reception worldwide, the natural step for the business was to turn the LRX concept car into reality,” said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s design director. “We have stayed true to our word and delivered a car that completely represents the spirit of the LRX.”

The sleekest, smallest, lightest and most fuel efficient Range Rover was unveiled in London in partnership with Vogue magazine as part of the manufacturer’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

Similar in size to the Land Rover Freelander 2, it will join the full-size Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in New Zealand later next year.

Customers will have a choice of either a four- or two-wheel-drive version, with CO2 emissions lower than 130g/km.

It will be the first time a Range Rover model has been available with two-wheel-drive, which will consume slightly less fuel. These are part of the company’s efforts to address climate change issues. Biofuel capabilities, regenerative brakes, an efficient small diesel and a hybrid version are among other planet-saving features likely to be seen in the range.

Offering the vehicle as a two-door is a brave move in a world where four-doors dominate SUV sales. The original Range Rover was introduced as a two-door, and it took almost 10 years of production before a four-door was introduced. However, it’s believed that a four-door Evoque is in the works and will appear long before 10 years have passed.

Phil Popham, managing director of Land Rover, called Evoque an important step for the future continued success and growth of the brand.

“The Evoque will be sold in over 160 countries, so it was important to give the car a name that was instantly recognisable through language and cultural boundaries throughout the world,” he said. “We wanted to create a new name which was innovative and different.”

It will be built at the modern Halewood factory, creating 1000 new jobs in the Merseyside area.

Meanwhile, it is being reported that Tata Motors has made plans to assemble the Freelander 2 in India. Tata hopes the local assembly will satisfy local demand for luxury vehicles, as well as offering significant tax advantages. Jaguar Land Rover is also looking for an assembly plant in China.
