New Freelander 2

Land Rover has unveiled the new Freelander 2 at the Geneva Motor Show. The 4×4 will be released in April and will cost around £22,300.

The car has already won awards from BBC TopGear SUV of the year and What Car? Best 4×4 award.

The 4×4 does 33.2 miles per gallon and for the first three years or 45,000 miles, the car is under the Land Rover CO2 offset programme which will raise money for projects which are designed to reduce CO2.

Optional extras for the 4×4 include sports wheels, iPod or MP3 connectivity, and rear screen entertainment including dvd players

First projects in Land Rover CO2 offset programme.

Land Rover recently announced that they would be working on ways to reduce CO2 and these are the first projects that they intend to undertake in order to reduce the levels of CO2. More projects are expected to be announced soon once the details have been finalized.

The first will be in Tajikistan where two hydro-electric generators will be installed which will then be supplied by a lake. The purpose for this will be to provide people in the city of Khorog with a reliable source of light and power.

The second will be creating a wind farm in the Hebei providence of China which will reduce the number of coal power stations in use in China.

The way this will be implemented will be that all new Land Rovers (sold in the UK) will have a surcharge depending on the CO2 emissions for each model and vehicle. This will apply up to 45,000 miles and normally about 3 years use which will normally cost around £85-£165. This money will then be used to support the projects.

Land Rover on top at the Troodos Mountain Challenge

Last weekend saw the Troodos Mountain Challenge in Cyprus where competitors race as they drive through snow and ice to get to the top of the mountain. Fifteen competitors took part but only a few finished. Of the few who finished were two Land Rovers, a Land Rover Discovery and a Land Rover Defender

The race went ahead despite 3 days of snow before the race which meant the competitors were racing on 5cm of ice which was then covered in snow which was up to 50cm deep in places

All the 4×4’s that took part were modified in ways to help them with the challenge, including, hydraulic winch’s and winch bumpers, modified suspensions and tyres and after four hours, the winner was Achilleas Gabrielides.
