Land Rover launches 2m-tonne CO2 offset programme at Motor Show
Land Rover launched a pilot CO2 offset programme in the UK, at the British International Motor Show’s press day yesterday. “It is the biggest and most comprehensive programme of its kind ever by a UK car company and will allow both the firm and its customers to contribute to a cleaner environment,†said Phil Popham, managing director. ‘The ultimate goal is CO2 neutrality and projects will include investment in renewable projects such as wind and solar, technology change and energy efficiency. The pilot is set up specifically for Land Rover and supports Ford’s £1bn investment in the UK, announced yesterday.â€
The independently-run programme lasts till the end of 2008 and involves the 3,000 engineers at Land Rover’s HQ in Gaydon, Warwickshire. It is overseen by the CO2 offset provider Climate Care (www.climatecare.org/) and could offset over two million tonnes of CO2, during the pilot, equivalent to the output from 125,000 homes.
Land Rover will continue to cut emissions from its factories and from 2007 models, all its UK customers will pay to offset the CO2 emissions from their vehicles. The charge is based on the first 45,000 miles of driving and represents an investment of between £85 and £165 depending on the model. “Research has shown that Land Rover customers are prepared to play an active role in fighting climate change,†said Popham.
- While Land Rover unveiled its new Freelander 2 at the show yesterday, fellow PAG brand Jaguar unveiled three new models – the XKR 420bhp V8 supercharged sports car, a new XJ Long Wheelbase Diesel and another flagship model, the XJR Portfolio.
