It was going to take some doing, but it looks like the superb New Range Rover L405 has been outdone by Land Rover as an even more luxurious, long wheelbase, version has been revealed and it has its sights set firmly at the Chinese, chauffeur driven, market.
Long Wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography
Prices are expected to start at around £140,000 for the first LWB Range Rover in over 20 years. And it’s come about due to the demand for increased comfort and luxury for passengers in the back.
Phil Popham, Group Marketing Director, Jaguar Land Rover, said, “With the addition of the Range Rover long wheelbase to our portfolio of luxury SUVs, customers can now choose a vehicle that offers superior levels of interior space and comfort to compete in a market dominated by saloon cars up until this point.”
Coming in at just under eight inches longer (198mm) than the original, if you’ve got a very heavy wallet you can choose from either ‘bench’ or individual ‘Executive Class’ rear seats. The second row executive style seats can recline to 17 degrees, a full eight degrees more than the nine degrees on the standard wheelbase. And there’s plenty of other gadgets and gizmos available as you would expect.
LWB Range Rover Announced
Panoramic sunroof, powered door blinds, a redesigned centre console, with electronically deployable tables and a chiller compartment as well as 10.2 inch screens in the rear of the front seat headrests to name just a few, depending on seat choice.
Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer said, “The Range Rover Autobiography Black is the latest step in our transformational journey that moves luxury to another level. This vehicle is an intensely design focused response to our customers’ desire for more choice and exclusivity.”
The new flagship vehicle is being announced at the Guangzhou and Los Angeles motor shows but it will be trumped at the Dubai motor show on November 5th when the LWB Range Rover Autobiography Black is announced. It is believed that the “standard” LWB version will go on sale before the top-end ‘Black’ around March time 2014 with the biggest, boldest and priciest Range Rover ever looking likely for an August 2014 release date.
Land Rover has been designing a fully armoured Range Rover Vogue which is designed to protect the vehicle occupants from machine gun and hand grenade fire. The Range Rover Vogue Security Vehicle can be driven on any terrain and can even be driven through gates or walls.
The new Vogue was designed by Land Rover Special Vehicles and is the first Land Rover Security Vehicle to go into production. There will be four levels of security that the Land Rover can be purchased with. The first three levels of security offer protection against hand gun, assault rifle and high velocity rifle. The fourth level of security offers protection against armour piercing to European B6 standards. It can also withstand attack from NATO 7.62 ball rounds.
Even the floors of the vehicles are designed to protect the vehicle occupants and should withstand two grenades rolled into the path of the vehicle. The tyres are the run flat tyres which means even if the tyres are shot, the vehicle can still get away. The glass is plasma cut and is 40mm thick and is one of the only clues that the vehicle is an armoured vehicle.
